Gear Changing Course
A gear changing course (often called a gear conversion lesson) is an optional short training session designed for riders who have completed their CBT on an automatic scooter but want to learn how to ride a manual (geared) motorcycle.

Purpose of the Gear Changing Course
-
To help you transition from automatic to manual bikes.
-
To build confidence in handling clutch, throttle, and gear controls smoothly.
-
To prepare you for riding a geared 125cc motorcycle legally after CBT.

What You’ll Learn
-
Introduction to gears: how the clutch, gears, and throttle work together.
-
Starting and stopping smoothly: clutch control, bite point, and moving off without stalling.
-
Changing up and down through the gears while maintaining control.
-
Low-speed control: using the clutch and throttle in slow manoeuvres.
-
Braking and downshifting correctly when approaching junctions or stopping.
-
Practical road practice (in some courses) to get used to gears in real riding conditions.

Key Points
-
Even if you did your CBT on an automatic, you’re legally allowed to ride a manual 125cc (if you’re 17 or older).
-
The gear conversion course isn’t a legal requirement, but it’s highly recommended so you can ride safely and confidently.
-
It can also make the transition to a full motorcycle licence (A1, A2, or A) much easier, since those tests are normally done on geared bikes.
What You Need to Bring
-
A valid driving licence (provisional or full UK, or an EU licence registered with DVLA)
-
CBT certificate (DL196) – since this course is for riders who have already completed CBT
-
Appropriate clothing:
-
Sturdy trousers (e.g. jeans, not shorts)
-
Strong footwear/ankle protection (e.g. boots, not trainers)
-
A jacket suitable for riding
-
-
If you plan to use your own manual bike, you’ll also need:
-
Proof of insurance
-
Valid MOT certificate (if bike is over 3 years old)
-
Road tax proof
-
L-plates fitted front and rear
-

Duration
-
Usually 1–3 hours, depending on the rider’s progress and confidence.
