CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)
Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the first step for most people in the UK who want to ride a moped or motorcycle on the road. It’s not a test that you pass or fail, but a training course designed to make sure you can ride safely before you go out on your own.

Compulsory Basic Training objectives
The Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course is designed to give you the essential skills needed to ride a moped or lower-powered motorbike safely and confidently. The focus is on road safety and developing a solid level of competency that you can build upon when riding on your own.
Unlike a traditional driving test, there is no pass or fail. Instead, you’ll train under the guidance of a qualified instructor, who will be with you throughout the day. Their role is to support you, help you improve your motorcycling skills, and make sure you’re ready for independent riding.
Once your instructor is satisfied that you have met the CBT standard, you’ll be issued with a DL196 certificate. This allows you to continue practising on your own, within the legal limits of learner motorcycling.
What the CBT Course Involves
The training has five elements, taken in order:
Introduction – Covers legal responsibilities, equipment, and safety.
Practical on-site training – Learn about the bike, controls, and basic checks.

Practical on-site riding – Practice manoeuvres (starting, stopping, turning, braking).
Practical on-road training – Discuss road rules, hazards, and riding strategy.
Practical on-road riding – At least 2 hours of supervised road riding.Only when your instructor is satisfied with your competence in each stage will you move to the next.
